How is freelance income taxed in India?

Revenue = Rate × Hours × Weeks × FX, Take-home = Revenue − Expenses − Social − Tax, Salary* : Net_employee(Salary*) = Take-home, PPP $ = Take-home ÷ PPP

This page uses the same method as the Freelance Hourly Rate to Salary Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A freelancer in India bills a US client $30 an hour for 40 hours a week, 46 weeks a year, with 5% in business costs, as a Presumptive, section 44ADA.

  1. 1Revenue: $30 × 40 × 46 = $55,200, or ₹5,296,981 at ₹95.96 per dollar (ECB, 2026-09-24)
  2. 2Social contributions: ₹0; income tax: ₹389,529; together 7% of revenue
  3. 3Take-home after ₹264,849 of costs: ₹4,642,603 a year, ₹386,884 a month ($48,381)
  4. 4An employee in India would need to earn ₹6,330,668 (salary) to take home the same
  5. 5At purchasing power parity that take-home buys what $234,015 would in the US

$30 an hour is worth about the same as a ₹6,330,668 salary in India.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax does a freelancer pay in India in FY 2026-27?

On $30 an hour (₹5,296,981 a year), about 7% of revenue goes to social contributions and income tax as a Presumptive, section 44ADA, leaving ₹4,642,603 after 5% of costs. Half of gross receipts is taxed as profit under the new regime, with no books needed, up to ₹75 lakh of receipts.

How does section 44ADA work for freelancers?

Professionals in specified fields, including engineering, technical consultancy and IT work, can declare 50% of gross receipts as profit without keeping books, as long as receipts are under ₹75 lakh (with no more than 5% in cash). Tax is then charged on that half under the normal slabs, so under the new regime receipts up to ₹24 lakh can be tax-free thanks to the 87A rebate.

Do I pay GST on freelance income from foreign clients?

Export of services is zero-rated. Below ₹20 lakh of turnover you need not register; above it, register and file a Letter of Undertaking so you can invoice foreign clients without charging GST. The payment must arrive in convertible foreign exchange (or rupees where RBI allows).

Do clients abroad withhold tax from a freelancer in India?

Export of services is zero-rated for GST; with a Letter of Undertaking you charge no GST, and you only need to register above ₹20 lakh. US clients do not withhold with a W-8BEN.
