How is VA disability pay worked out?

Find the basic monthly rate for your combined rating and household: a Veteran alone at 100% receives $3,938.58, or $4,158.17 with a spouse. The basic rate already pays for one child; add the listed amount for each further child, and for a spouse on Aid and Attendance. 10% and 20% pay the same with any dependents.

combined = A + B × (100 − A) ÷ 100, rounded to a whole number at each step bilateral = combined(arms or legs) + 10% of it, rounded rating = combined rounded to the nearest 10 (ending in 5 → up)

This page uses the same method as the VA Disability Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Frequently asked questions

Is VA disability pay taxable?

No. VA disability compensation is not taxable federal income, and states do not tax it either. It does not count as earned income for Social Security, though it can affect needs-based benefits.

When do the 2026 rates change?

Each December 1, with the same cost-of-living adjustment as Social Security, usually announced in October. The rates on this page took effect on December 1, 2025 with a 2.8% increase, and this page is updated when the next adjustment is published.

Do dependents increase pay below 30%?

No. Additional amounts for a spouse, children or parents are paid only at a combined rating of 30% or more. At 10% and 20% everyone receives the same rate.
