Frequently asked questions
How much tax does a freelancer pay in Canada in 2026?
On $60 an hour (CA$155,854 a year), about 30% of revenue goes to social contributions and income tax as a Sole proprietor (Ontario), leaving CA$101,260 after 5% of costs. Federal and Ontario income tax, with both halves of CPP and CPP2 on self-employment income.
Why does a self-employed Canadian pay double CPP?
An employee and their employer each pay 5.95% of earnings between $3,500 and the $74,600 YMPE, and 4% each on CPP2 up to $85,000. Self-employed, you pay both halves: 11.9% and 8%, up to $8,460.90 and $832 in 2026. The employer half is deductible and the employee half earns a tax credit, which softens it.

Do clients abroad withhold tax from a freelancer in Canada?
US clients do not withhold on services performed in Canada if you give them a W-8BEN. Exported services are zero-rated for GST/HST.
