- 1Revenue: $50 × 40 × 46 = $92,000, or €80,936 at €0.88 per dollar (ECB, 2026-09-24)
- 2Social contributions: €6,000; income tax: €20,847; together 33% of revenue
- 3Take-home after €4,047 of costs: €50,042 a year, €4,170 a month ($56,883)
- 4An employee in Spain would need to earn €74,868 (salary (cuenta ajena)) to take home the same
- 5At purchasing power parity that take-home buys what $82,326 would in the US

Frequently asked questions
How much tax does a freelancer pay in Spain in 2026?
On $50 an hour (€80,936 a year), about 33% of revenue goes to social contributions and income tax as a Autónomo (estimación directa), leaving €50,042 after 5% of costs. Monthly cuota by income tramo, then IRPF on net income after the cuota and 5% hard-to-justify expenses.
How is the autónomo cuota worked out in 2026?
By your expected net income: profit less 7% for generic expenses, divided by twelve, puts you in one of 15 tramos. The 2026 table, frozen at the 2025 figures, runs from €200 a month below €670 of net income to €590 above €6,000. The cuota is regularised when the tax office confirms your actual income.
Can I use the Beckham law as a freelancer?
Since 2023 the special regime for inbound workers can cover some entrepreneurs and highly qualified professionals, including digital nomads on Spain's teleworking visa, taxing Spanish income at a flat 24% up to €600,000 for six years. It suits employees and visa holders better than ordinary autónomos; check eligibility before relying on it.
Do clients abroad withhold tax from a freelancer in Spain?
Invoices to business clients outside the EU carry no Spanish IVA and no IRPF withholding; you pay IRPF through quarterly Modelo 130 instead.
