How the Portugal D8 Visa Income Calculator works

Required = Base + Family add-ons, Base = k × Indicator (or a fixed amount), Margin = Income × FX ÷ Required − 1

This page uses the same method as the Digital Nomad Visa Eligibility Checker, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A single remote worker earning $4,500 a month, paid in US dollars, applying for Portugal's D8 Digital Nomad Visa.

  1. 1Portugal sets the threshold at 4 × RMMG (€920): €3,680 a month, using Decreto-Lei 139/2025 (mainland Portugal)
  2. 2At €0.88 per US dollar (ECB, 2026-09-24), $4,500 a month is €3,958.83
  3. 3That is 8% above the line, which is $4,183.06 a month in dollars

They clear Portugal's requirement, but by under 10%, so a currency move or a lean month could put them under it.

Frequently asked questions

How much income do I need for the Portugal D8 Digital Nomad Visa in 2026?

€3,680 a month (4 × RMMG (€920)) for a single applicant, read as the income you can show in your statements over the last 3 months. Consulates also commonly ask for savings of 12 times the minimum wage (€11,040 in 2026).

Is the D8 threshold based on the mainland or island minimum wage?

The national figure for the mainland, €920 in 2026. The Azores (€966) and Madeira (€980) have higher regional minimum wages, but consulates apply the mainland figure, giving €3,680 a month.

What is the difference between the temporary stay and residence D8?

The temporary stay visa lasts up to a year and does not lead to residence. The residence visa gets you into Portugal to apply for a two-year residence permit with AIMA, renewable for three, which can count towards permanent residence. The income test is the same for both.

How is the D8 Digital Nomad Visa taxed?

Portugal's NHR regime closed to new entrants in 2024; its replacement (IFICI) is aimed at specific professions, so most D8 holders who stay 183 days pay normal progressive rates.
