How is freelance income taxed in Germany?

Revenue = Rate × Hours × Weeks × FX, Take-home = Revenue − Expenses − Social − Tax, Salary* : Net_employee(Salary*) = Take-home, PPP $ = Take-home ÷ PPP

This page uses the same method as the Freelance Hourly Rate to Salary Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A freelancer in Germany bills a US client $60 an hour for 40 hours a week, 46 weeks a year, with 5% in business costs, as a Freiberufler (voluntary GKV).

  1. 1Revenue: $60 × 40 × 46 = $110,400, or €97,123 at €0.88 per dollar (ECB, 2026-09-24)
  2. 2Social contributions: €15,136; income tax: €21,597; together 38% of revenue
  3. 3Take-home after €4,856 of costs: €55,535 a year, €4,628 a month ($63,126)
  4. 4An employee in Germany would need to earn €94,699 (Angestellter salary) to take home the same
  5. 5At purchasing power parity that take-home buys what $77,251 would in the US

$60 an hour is worth about the same as a €94,699 Angestellter salary in Germany.

Frequently asked questions

How much tax does a freelancer pay in Germany in 2026?

On $60 an hour (€97,123 a year), about 38% of revenue goes to social contributions and income tax as a Freiberufler (voluntary GKV), leaving €55,535 after 5% of costs. Income tax by the § 32a formula and solidarity surcharge, plus statutory health and care insurance at the full rate.

How much health insurance does a freelancer pay in Germany in 2026?

Voluntary statutory cover costs 14.6% plus the fund's additional rate (2.9% on average in 2026) on your profit, plus 3.6% care insurance or 4.2% if you are 23 or older with no children. The base is at least €1,318.33 a month and at most €5,812.50, so the most you pay is about €1,261 a month; you pay both the employee and employer shares.

Why is the equivalent salary so close to my revenue?

Employees in Germany lose about 20% of their salary to social insurance, pension and unemployment included, while a Freiberufler pays only health and care. The comparison is fair on take-home pay but not on security: the freelancer builds no state pension and must save for one privately.

Do clients abroad withhold tax from a freelancer in Germany?

Foreign clients pay gross. Services to business clients outside the EU are not subject to German VAT (the place of supply is abroad), so Kleinunternehmer status is not needed for them.
