How do you convert a freelance hourly rate to a salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by billable hours a week and working weeks a year, subtract business costs, then your country's social contributions and income tax. The result is your take-home pay. The equivalent salary is the employee salary that takes home the same after payroll deductions, usually well below the freelance revenue.
Your US-dollar rate is turned into a year's revenue and converted at the ECB reference rate. Each country's own rules then take out social contributions (health, pension, national insurance) and income tax on the regime freelancers there normally use, in the order the law applies them: most let you deduct social contributions before income tax. The equivalent salary is found by searching for the employee salary whose take-home, after that country's payroll deductions, matches yours. Purchasing power divides your take-home by the World Bank's household-consumption PPP factor.
Revenue = Rate × Hours × Weeks × FX, Take-home = Revenue − Expenses − Social − Tax, Salary* : Net_employee(Salary*) = Take-home, PPP $ = Take-home ÷ PPP- FX
- Local currency per US dollar, from the ECB reference rate
- Social
- Contributions a freelancer pays, e.g. SE tax, Class 4 NIC, GKV, cuota de autónomos, ZUS, INSS
- Salary*
- The employee salary with the same take-home pay
- PPP
- Local currency per international dollar (World Bank); 1 in the US
Worked example
A freelancer in Germany bills a US client $50 an hour for 40 hours a week, 46 weeks a year, with 5% in business costs, as a Freiberufler (voluntary GKV).
- 1Revenue: $50 × 40 × 46 = $92,000, or €80,936 at €0.88 per dollar (ECB, 2026-09-24)
- 2Social contributions: €15,136; income tax: €15,106; together 37% of revenue
- 3Take-home after €4,047 of costs: €46,647 a year, €3,887 a month ($53,024)
- 4An employee in Germany would need to earn €77,411 (Angestellter salary) to take home the same
- 5At purchasing power parity that take-home buys what $64,889 would in the US
$50 an hour is worth about the same as a €77,411 Angestellter salary in Germany.
Frequently asked questions
Where does a US-dollar freelance rate go furthest?
At $50 an hour, 40 hours a week for 46 weeks, take-home pay buys the most in India, Philippines, Brazil, once tax and local prices are counted. It buys the least in Australia, where the same rate takes home $66,093. Low tax regimes for freelancers (India's 44ADA, Poland's ryczałt, Brazil's Simples Nacional, Mexico's RESICO) do as much as low prices.
How many billable hours should I assume?
Fewer than you work. Between holidays, public holidays, sick days, gaps between contracts, sales and admin, most full-time freelancers bill 1,400 to 1,800 hours a year, against 2,080 paid hours in a US salaried job. The default here is 40 hours for 46 weeks, 1,840 hours; lower it if you are between clients often.
Why is the equivalent salary lower than my freelance revenue?
Because a salary buys you things a freelancer pays for: the employer's share of social contributions, paid holidays and sick days, and often health cover and a pension. A freelancer also bills fewer hours than they work. That is why the usual rule of thumb is that a contract rate should be 1.3 to 1.5 times the hourly equivalent of a salary; this calculator gives the figure for your country instead of the rule of thumb.
Does a tax treaty mean I pay less tax on money from US clients?
Usually not. A tax treaty decides which country may tax income and stops it being taxed twice, but a freelancer working from home is taxed where they live, and US clients do not withhold tax from foreign contractors who give them a W-8BEN. So the tax you pay is your own country's, which is what this calculator models. Treaties matter when you work physically in the client's country or have a permanent establishment there.
What does purchasing power parity (PPP) add?
Market exchange rates say what your income is worth in dollars; PPP says what it buys. The World Bank's household-consumption PPP factor compares the price of the same basket of goods and services across countries. A take-home of 1 million pesos goes further in Bogotá than its dollar value suggests, and the PPP figure shows how much a US resident would need to earn after tax to live the same way.
Where do the exchange rates come from?
The European Central Bank's daily reference rates, refreshed when the page loads. If the live feed cannot be reached, the calculator uses the snapshot from 2026-09-24 and says so.
