How Spain's threshold is built

  • Base: 2 × SMI (€1,424.50) = €2,849 a month
  • Stay: 1-year visa, or a 3-year residence permit if you apply from inside Spain, renewable for 2 more

Beyond the money

  • At least 3 months working for your employer or clients beforehand, and no more than 20% of your work may be for Spanish clients.
  • A degree, or 3 years' experience in your field.
  • Private health insurance with no co-payments, or social security cover from your home country.

How the Digital Nomad Visa Eligibility Checker works

Many countries set the threshold as a multiple of a local figure, such as Spain's minimum wage (SMI) or Colombia's (SMMLV), so it moves every year. The calculator rebuilds the threshold from this year's figure, adds what the rules ask for each family member, converts your income into the visa's currency at the latest ECB reference rate, and compares the two. Annual thresholds are divided by twelve. Where a visa accepts savings instead of income, both routes are checked and the better one is shown.

Required = Base + Family add-ons, Base = k × Indicator (or a fixed amount), Margin = Income × FX ÷ Required − 1
k
The multiple the law sets, e.g. 2 for Spain, 3 for Colombia
Indicator
The local minimum wage, average salary or index the threshold is pegged to
FX
Units of the visa's currency per unit of yours, from the ECB reference rate
Margin
How far above the line you are; under 10% counts as borderline, since a rate move could erase it

Worked example

A single remote worker earning $3,500 a month, paid in US dollars, applying for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (international teleworking visa).

  1. 1Spain sets the threshold at 2 × SMI (€1,424.50): €2,849 a month, using Real Decreto 126/2026: €1,221 × 14 payments = €17,094 a year
  2. 2At €0.88 per US dollar (ECB, 2026-09-24), $3,500 a month is €3,079.09
  3. 3That is 8% above the line, which is $3,238.46 a month in dollars

They clear Spain's requirement, but by under 10%, so a currency move or a lean month could put them under it.

Frequently asked questions

Which digital nomad visa has the lowest income requirement?

Brazil's, at $1,500 a month, or savings instead. Colombia's is also low in dollar terms at COP 5,252,715 a month (3 × SMMLV (COP 1,750,905)), roughly USD 1,600. In Europe, Hungary (€3,000 a month) and Spain (€2,849 a month (2 × SMI (€1,424.50))) are among the most accessible.

Why do some countries' requirements change every year?

Because they are pegged to a local figure rather than fixed. Spain asks for 200% of its minimum wage (SMI), Portugal 4 times its minimum wage, Colombia 3 times its (SMMLV), Croatia 2.5 times last year's average net salary and Mexico a number of days of its UMA index. When those figures are updated, usually in January, the threshold moves with them, which is why last year's blog posts are often wrong.

Does my family change the requirement?

In most countries, yes. Spain adds 75% of the SMI for the first family member and 25% for each after; Portugal 50% of the minimum wage for a partner and 30% per child; Greece 20% and 15%; Costa Rica raises the bar from USD 3,000 to USD 4,000. Where a country does not price family in, the result says so.

Why does the calculator call a small margin 'borderline'?

Consulates convert your income at the rate on the day they assess it, and many want the threshold met in each month of your statements, not just on average. An income 10% above the line can fall below it after a currency move or one lean month, so aim for more headroom or show savings as well.

Is the requirement before or after tax?

It depends on the country. Spain, Italy, Estonia, Japan and Malta read it as gross income; Greece, Croatia and Hungary as net; many others do not say, and consulates usually go by what lands in your bank account. The result for each country states which it is. If in doubt, compare your net income, which is the safer test.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

The European Central Bank's daily reference rates, refreshed when the page loads. If the live feed cannot be reached, the calculator uses the snapshot from 2026-09-24 and says so. The Colombian peso, UAE dirham and Saudi riyal are not published by the ECB and are derived from the dollar rate.

How is the Digital Nomad Visa taxed?

Moving your tax residence to Greece can halve income tax on employment income for 7 years under article 5C of the income tax code.
