How do you read the VA combined ratings table?

Find your highest rating in the left column and the next rating across the top; the cell is their combined value. For a third rating, find that combined value in the left column and read across again. Round the last value to the nearest 10, with values ending in 5 going up, to get the rating VA pays.

combined = A + B × (100 − A) ÷ 100, rounded to a whole number at each step bilateral = combined(arms or legs) + 10% of it, rounded rating = combined rounded to the nearest 10 (ending in 5 → up)

This page uses the same method as the VA Disability Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

The regulation's own example: ratings of 60%, 40% and 20%.

  1. 1Start with the highest, First rating: 60
  2. 260 and 40 (Second rating): 60 + 40 × 40 ÷ 100 = 76
  3. 376 and 20 (Third rating): 76 + 20 × 24 ÷ 100 = 80.8 → 81

A combined value of 81, rated 80%: $2,102.15 a month for a Veteran alone.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the table start at 19?

Table I is used after the first combination, and the smallest two ratings, 10% and 10%, combine to 19. The highest value it lists is 94, because anything from 95 is already rated 100%.

Are the numbers in the table rounded?

Yes, to whole numbers, with .5 going up: 25 and 10 combine to 32.5, which the table shows as 33. Using the table for each step is the same as rounding after every combination, which is how this calculator works.
