How is cloud data transfer billed?

As of September 28, 2026, on Microsoft Azure internet egress from North America starts at $0.087 per GB; Front Door Standard starts at $0.083 per GB; and a NAT Gateway costs $0.045 an hour plus $0.045 per GB processed. Your bill is each traffic type's gigabytes times its rate, tier by tier, plus any hourly charges.

monthly = tiered(internet egress) + CDN delivery + misses × origin fetch + inter-region GB × rate + cross-AZ GB × rate + NAT gateways × hourly × 730 + NAT GB × processing rate

This page uses the same method as the Cloud Egress Cost Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A workload in North America on Microsoft Azure: 10 TB a month to the internet, 500 GB to another region, 1,000 GB across zones, 500 GB through NAT, on 3 servers.

  1. 1Internet egress: $882
  2. 2Inter-region: $10.00
  3. 3NAT gateway hours: $32.85
  4. 4NAT data processed: $22.50
  5. 5Total: $948 a month

$948 a month on Microsoft Azure, $11,370 a year. The cheapest cloud listed that runs servers, DigitalOcean, would cost $0.00 a month.

Frequently asked questions

What does Microsoft Azure charge for bandwidth?

At list prices, internet egress from North America starts at $0.087 per GB; Front Door Standard starts at $0.083 per GB; and a NAT Gateway costs $0.045 an hour plus $0.045 per GB processed. Internet egress over Microsoft's premium global network; choosing the transit-ISP routing preference is cheaper ($0.08 per GB to 10 TB from North America). Azure stopped billing traffic between availability zones in 2024. Front Door adds a $35 monthly base fee and request charges, which are not counted here.

Does Azure charge for traffic between availability zones?

No. In 2024 Microsoft stopped charging for data transfer between availability zones in the same region, whether over private or public IP addresses, so Azure's cross-AZ line in the calculator is zero. That makes Azure cheaper than AWS and Google for chatty multi-zone deployments, where zone-to-zone traffic is billed at $0.01 per GB.
