Each provider's own CDN: CloudFront, Cloud CDN, Front Door, Cloudflare or Spaces CDN.

Traffic inside the cloud

GB / month

Replication, backups and calls to services in a different region.

GB / month

Service-to-service calls, load balancing and database replicas in other zones of the same region.

Outbound calls, package and image pulls from private subnets.

Usually one per availability zone.

How is cloud data transfer billed?

As of September 28, 2026, on DigitalOcean each server includes 4,000 GB of transfer in North America, pooled, with overage at $0.01 per GB; Spaces CDN starts at $0.01 per GB; and there is no managed NAT gateway to pay for. Your bill is each traffic type's gigabytes times its rate, tier by tier, plus any hourly charges.

monthly = tiered(internet egress) + CDN delivery + misses × origin fetch + inter-region GB × rate + cross-AZ GB × rate + NAT gateways × hourly × 730 + NAT GB × processing rate

This page uses the same method as the Cloud Egress Cost Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A workload in North America on DigitalOcean: 10 TB a month to the internet, 500 GB to another region, 1,000 GB across zones, 500 GB through NAT, on 3 servers.

  1. 1Every line falls inside the free allowances.

$0.00 a month, $0.00 a year: the lowest of any cloud listed that runs servers.

Frequently asked questions

What does DigitalOcean charge for bandwidth?

At list prices, each server includes 4,000 GB of transfer in North America, pooled, with overage at $0.01 per GB; Spaces CDN starts at $0.01 per GB; and there is no managed NAT gateway to pay for. Each Droplet adds its transfer allowance to a pool shared across the team; the calculator assumes 4,000 GB a server, the 4 GB Basic Droplet's. Overage is $0.01 per GB. Traffic between Droplets over the VPC is free, and there are no availability zones. Spaces CDN delivery comes with the $5 Spaces subscription and its 1 TB of transfer. DigitalOcean has no South American region.

How does DigitalOcean's bandwidth pool work?

Every Droplet brings a monthly transfer allowance, from 500 GB on the $4 plan to several terabytes on larger ones, and the allowances of all your Droplets are pooled across the team. Only outbound traffic beyond the pool is billed, at $0.01 per GB. Inbound traffic and traffic between Droplets over the VPC are free.
