Traffic to users

GB / month

Everything your servers, storage and CDN send to users and other services on the internet.

Each provider's own CDN: CloudFront, Cloud CDN, Front Door, Cloudflare or Spaces CDN.

Traffic inside the cloud

GB / month

Replication, backups and calls to services in a different region.

GB / month

Service-to-service calls, load balancing and database replicas in other zones of the same region.

NAT and servers

GB / month

Outbound calls, package and image pulls from private subnets.

Usually one per availability zone.

Sets pooled transfer allowances and Cloud NAT's per-VM fee.

How is cloud data transfer billed?

monthly = tiered(internet egress) + CDN delivery + misses × origin fetch + inter-region GB × rate + cross-AZ GB × rate + NAT gateways × hourly × 730 + NAT GB × processing rate

This page uses the same method as the Cloud Egress Cost Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A workload in North America: 10 TB a month to the internet, 500 GB to another region, 1,000 GB across zones, 500 GB through NAT, on 3 servers.

  1. 1AWS: internet egress $913, inter-region $10.00, cross-az $20.00, nat gateway hours $32.85, nat data processed $22.50 = $998
  2. 2Cloudflare: nothing billable = $0.00
  3. 3Difference: $998 a month

Cloudflare is $998 a month cheaper for this workload, $11,975 a year.

Frequently asked questions

Is AWS or Cloudflare cheaper for egress?

For internet egress from North America on 3 servers at list rates, at 1 TB a month Cloudflare costs $0.00 against $83.16; at 10 TB a month Cloudflare costs $0.00 against $913; and at 100 TB a month Cloudflare costs $0.00 against $7,978. Zone, NAT and CDN charges can change the answer, so enter your own traffic.

Can I put Cloudflare in front of AWS to cut egress?

Yes, and it is a common pattern: Cloudflare caches and serves the traffic for free, so AWS only pays egress on cache misses. With a 95% hit ratio, 10 TB of delivery costs AWS about 512 GB of egress instead of 10 TB. Moving large static files to R2 removes even that, since R2 charges no egress. AWS still bills its internal traffic: cross-AZ, inter-region and NAT.
