How is rooftop solar payback worked out in Maharashtra?

Saving₍y₎ = [Bill(U) − Bill(U − G₍y₎/12)] × 12 × (1 + e)^(y−1), G₍y₎ = kW × H × 365 × PR × (1 − d)^(y−1)

This page uses the same method as the Solar ROI Calculator India, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Monthly bill before solar on each Maharashtra DISCOM's tariff, with fixed charges, surcharges and duty, for a 3 kW connection.
DISCOM100 units200 units300 units500 units
MSEDCL₹796₹2,234₹3,673₹7,531
Adani Electricity₹712₹1,744₹2,723₹4,971
BEST₹586₹1,506₹2,373₹5,197
Tata Power Mumbai₹639₹1,551₹2,411₹5,183

Worked example

A Pune home on MSEDCL with a ₹3,000 monthly bill and a flat RCC roof, assuming prices rise 5% a year.

  1. 1Working the bill back through the MSEDCL slabs, charges and duty gives about 253 units a month
  2. 2At 5.4 peak sun hours, 2 kW makes about 253 units a month, 100% of that use
  3. 32 kW at ₹60,000 per kW costs ₹1,20,000; PM Surya Ghar pays ₹60,000, leaving ₹60,000
  4. 4The first year saves ₹34,144, and the saving grows as tariffs rise

The system pays for itself in about 1.7 years and leaves the household about ₹14,66,741 ahead over 25 years.

Frequently asked questions

Which Maharashtra DISCOM gives the fastest solar payback?

Usually MSEDCL for bills above a few hundred units, because its upper slabs reach ₹15-17.53 a unit before wheeling and 16% duty. In Mumbai, BEST and Tata Power charge over ₹9 above 300 units, so large Mumbai bills pay back quickly too. The table compares the same consumption on each tariff.

Does Maharashtra add a state subsidy for rooftop solar?

Not as a general top-up. Maharashtra households get the PM Surya Ghar central subsidy of up to ₹78,000, the same on MSEDCL, Adani Electricity, Tata Power and BEST. What makes solar pay back fast here is the steep upper slabs, not an extra subsidy.

How does net metering settle in Maharashtra?

Surplus units are banked month to month and settled once a year at the MERC-approved rate. MERC has confirmed that residential net metering continues under the new ToD meters, with banked units usable at any hour.
