How is the PM Surya Ghar subsidy worked out?

PM Surya Ghar pays ₹30,000 a kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third: ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW and ₹78,000 for 3 kW or more. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Odisha add their own top-ups.

Saving₍y₎ = [Bill(U) − Bill(U − G₍y₎/12)] × 12 × (1 + e)^(y−1), G₍y₎ = kW × H × 365 × PR × (1 − d)^(y−1)

This page uses the same method as the Solar ROI Calculator India, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A Uttar Pradesh home on UPPCL with a ₹2,500 monthly bill and a flat RCC roof, assuming prices rise 5% a year.

  1. 1Working the bill back through the UPPCL slabs, charges and duty gives about 350 units a month
  2. 2At 5 peak sun hours, 3 kW makes about 351 units a month, 100% of that use
  3. 33 kW at ₹60,000 per kW costs ₹1,80,000; PM Surya Ghar pays ₹78,000 and the UPNEDA state subsidy ₹30,000, leaving ₹72,000
  4. 4The first year saves ₹25,862, and the saving grows as tariffs rise

The system pays for itself in about 2.7 years and leaves the household about ₹10,27,403 ahead over 25 years.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?

Any household with its own residential electricity connection and a roof to install on, which has not already claimed a central rooftop solar subsidy. The system must be on-grid, installed by a vendor empanelled on the portal, and use ALMM-listed panels made in India.

How do I apply for PM Surya Ghar?

Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your state, DISCOM and consumer number, apply for rooftop solar, and wait for the DISCOM's feasibility approval. Choose an empanelled vendor to install, then apply for net metering. After the DISCOM inspects and commissions the system, submit your bank details and the subsidy is paid into your account, usually within 30 days.

Is the subsidy paid on the system's full size?

On the size installed, but it stops rising at 3 kW. A 5 kW system gets the same ₹78,000 as a 3 kW one, so the subsidy per kW falls as the system grows. State top-ups follow their own rules: Uttar Pradesh pays on the first 2 kW, Rajasthan a fixed ₹17,000, and Odisha up to ₹60,000.

Can I get a loan for the part the subsidy does not cover?

Yes. Public sector banks offer collateral-free loans for PM Surya Ghar systems up to 3 kW at about 7% a year, and the subsidy goes to the loan account when it arrives. Choose 'Solar loan' in the calculator to see the EMI and the payback with a loan.
