How is the price of a 3 kW system after subsidy worked out?
A 3 kW on-grid system costs about ₹1,80,000 installed. PM Surya Ghar pays ₹78,000, leaving about ₹1,02,000, and less in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Odisha, which add their own top-ups.
Saving₍y₎ = [Bill(U) − Bill(U − G₍y₎/12)] × 12 × (1 + e)^(y−1), G₍y₎ = kW × H × 365 × PR × (1 − d)^(y−1)This page uses the same method as the Solar ROI Calculator India, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example
A Pune home on MSEDCL with a ₹3,500 monthly bill and a flat RCC roof, assuming prices rise 5% a year.
- 1Working the bill back through the MSEDCL slabs, charges and duty gives about 288 units a month
- 2At 5.4 peak sun hours, 2.5 kW makes about 316 units a month, 100% of that use
- 32.5 kW at ₹60,000 per kW costs ₹1,50,000; PM Surya Ghar pays ₹69,000, leaving ₹81,000
- 4The first year saves ₹41,170, and the saving grows as tariffs rise
The system pays for itself in about 1.9 years and leaves the household about ₹17,93,392 ahead over 25 years.
Frequently asked questions
How many units does a 3 kW solar system make?
Between about 320 and 410 units a month, depending on the state's sunshine: around 320 in West Bengal and close to 410 in Rajasthan and Gujarat. That suits a home using 300-400 units a month, a typical bill of ₹2,500-4,000.
How much roof does a 3 kW system need?
About 300 sq ft of shadow-free flat roof, or around 240 sq ft on a metal sheet roof where the panels lie at the roof's own pitch. An elevated structure on an RCC roof uses the same area but leaves the terrace usable underneath.
Why is 3 kW the most popular size under PM Surya Ghar?
The subsidy reaches its ₹78,000 maximum at 3 kW, so it is the largest size on which the government pays its full share, and public sector banks' collateral-free solar loans cover systems up to 3 kW. Above it, every extra kW is paid entirely by you.
