How is rooftop solar payback worked out in West Bengal?
Saving₍y₎ = [Bill(U) − Bill(U − G₍y₎/12)] × 12 × (1 + e)^(y−1), G₍y₎ = kW × H × 365 × PR × (1 − d)^(y−1)This page uses the same method as the Solar ROI Calculator India, which explains each term and assumption in full.
| DISCOM | 100 units | 200 units | 300 units | 500 units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CESC | ₹760 | ₹1,656 | ₹2,563 | ₹4,756 |
| WBSEDCL | ₹782 | ₹1,609 | ₹2,455 | ₹4,483 |
Worked example
A Kolkata home on CESC with a ₹2,500 monthly bill and a flat RCC roof, assuming prices rise 5% a year.
- 1Working the bill back through the CESC slabs, charges and duty gives about 293 units a month
- 2At 4.6 peak sun hours, 2.5 kW makes about 269 units a month, 92% of that use
- 32.5 kW at ₹60,000 per kW costs ₹1,50,000; PM Surya Ghar pays ₹69,000, leaving ₹81,000
- 4The first year saves ₹27,655, and the saving grows as tariffs rise
The system pays for itself in about 2.8 years and leaves the household about ₹11,19,291 ahead over 25 years.
Frequently asked questions
Does West Bengal give a state subsidy for rooftop solar?
Not on top of PM Surya Ghar at present, so the central subsidy of up to ₹78,000 is the main support. With lower sunshine than western India, about 4.6 peak sun hours, a West Bengal home needs a slightly larger system for the same consumption.
Is CESC or WBSEDCL more expensive?
They are close. Both start around ₹5 a unit and reach about ₹9.20 above 300 units a month. CESC adds a percentage FPPA surcharge; WBSEDCL bills every three months. The table shows the same consumption on each tariff.
How does net metering settle in West Bengal?
Net metering under WBERC's regulations, with surplus units carried forward and settled at the end of the year.
