How the Bhubaneswar Solar Calculator (TPCODL) works
Saving₍y₎ = [Bill(U) − Bill(U − G₍y₎/12)] × 12 × (1 + e)^(y−1), G₍y₎ = kW × H × 365 × PR × (1 − d)^(y−1)This page uses the same method as the Solar ROI Calculator India, which explains each term and assumption in full.
Worked example
A Bhubaneswar home on TPCODL with a ₹2,000 monthly bill and a flat RCC roof, assuming prices rise 5% a year.
- 1Working the bill back through the TPCODL slabs, charges and duty gives about 378 units a month
- 2At 4.9 peak sun hours, 3.5 kW makes about 402 units a month, 100% of that use
- 33.5 kW at ₹55,000 per kW costs ₹1,92,500; PM Surya Ghar pays ₹78,000 and the Odisha state top-up (OASBY) ₹60,000, leaving ₹54,500
- 4The first year saves ₹24,122, and the saving grows as tariffs rise
The system pays for itself in about 2.2 years and leaves the household about ₹9,84,632 ahead over 25 years.
Frequently asked questions
How much subsidy can an Odisha household get in total?
Up to ₹1,38,000 for a 3 kW system: ₹78,000 from PM Surya Ghar and ₹60,000 from the state. Odisha pays ₹25,000 for 1 kW, ₹50,000 for 2 kW and ₹60,000 for 3 kW or more, which brings a 3 kW system to well under half its installed price.
Why is the payback still slower than the subsidy suggests?
Odisha's tariff is low, from ₹2.90 a unit and only ₹6.10 above 400 units, so each unit solar replaces saves less than in Maharashtra or Delhi. The large top-up makes up for much of it. The same tariff applies on TPWODL, TPSODL and TPNODL.
How does net metering settle on TPCODL?
Net metering with banked units carried forward and the surplus settled yearly at the OERC-approved rate.
