How the Punjab Solar Calculator (PSPCL) works

Saving₍y₎ = [Bill(U) − Bill(U − G₍y₎/12)] × 12 × (1 + e)^(y−1), G₍y₎ = kW × H × 365 × PR × (1 − d)^(y−1)

This page uses the same method as the Solar ROI Calculator India, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A Punjab home on PSPCL with a ₹3,000 monthly bill and a flat RCC roof, assuming prices rise 5% a year.

  1. 1Working the bill back through the PSPCL slabs, charges and duty gives about 450 units a month
  2. 2At 5.2 peak sun hours, 3.5 kW makes about 426 units a month, 95% of that use
  3. 33.5 kW at ₹55,000 per kW costs ₹1,92,500; PM Surya Ghar pays ₹78,000, leaving ₹1,14,500
  4. 4The first year saves ₹36,007, and the saving grows as tariffs rise

The system pays for itself in about 3.0 years and leaves the household about ₹15,41,019 ahead over 25 years.

Frequently asked questions

How does Punjab's 300 free units affect rooftop solar?

Strongly, in both directions. A home using 300 units a month or less already pays nothing, so solar has no bill to cut. Above 300, every unit is charged, with fixed charges and duty, so a home at 400 units pays the full bill. Solar that brings its net use to 300 or below wipes out the whole bill, not just the 100 units it replaced.

What does PSPCL charge per unit in 2026-27?

For a load above 2 kW and up to 7 kW, ₹4.25 a unit for the first 300 units a month and ₹7.05 above that, with a fixed charge of ₹70 a kW levied on 80% of the load. Homes up to 2 kW pay ₹3.85 for the first 300 units. Electricity duty and the infrastructure fee add about 20%.

How does net metering settle on PSPCL?

Net metering on PSPCL's bill, with banked units carried forward and the surplus settled yearly at the PSERC-approved rate.
