How do carriers calculate dimensional weight?

USPS bills parcels of one cubic foot or less at actual weight; UPS applies dimensional weight to everything. Above one cubic foot both round inches up and divide by 139 since USPS's July 2026 change, so the billable weight is the same and the rate decides.

DIM weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor; billable = max(actual, DIM, surcharge minimum)

This page uses the same method as the Shipping DIM Weight Comparison Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A 12 × 12 × 12 in box weighing 5 lb.

  1. 1UPS Ground: divisor 139, billed at 13 lb (DIM weight)
  2. 2USPS Ground Advantage: divisor 139, billed at 5 lb (actual weight)

USPS Ground Advantage bills it lighter, so it takes the smaller DIM penalty.

Frequently asked questions

Is USPS still better for large, light boxes?

Less than before. Until July 2026 USPS divided by 166, so an 18 × 14 × 12 box billed 19 lb against 22 lb at UPS. Both now bill 22 lb. USPS also adds nonstandard fees above 22 in and two cubic feet, and caps parcels at 70 lb.

Does UPS or USPS Ground bill a 12 × 12 × 12 in box lighter?

A 12 × 12 × 12 in box weighing 5 lb bills 13 lb (DIM weight) with UPS Ground and 5 lb (actual weight) with USPS Ground Advantage. USPS Ground Advantage charges the lighter weight, so on equal rates it costs less. Try your own box in the calculator above.
