How do carriers calculate dimensional weight?

DHL Express and UPS Worldwide Express both divide cubic centimetres by 5000 and round up to the next half kilogram, or divide cubic inches by 139 and bill whole pounds from the US. They bill the same chargeable weight; the difference is in rates and in DHL's lower piece size limit.

DIM weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor; billable = max(actual, DIM, surcharge minimum)

This page uses the same method as the Shipping DIM Weight Comparison Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A 40 × 30 × 20 cm box weighing 3 kg.

  1. 1DHL Express Worldwide: divisor 5,000, billed at 5 kg (DIM weight)
  2. 2UPS Worldwide Express: divisor 5,000, billed at 5 kg (DIM weight)

Both bill the same weight, so the rate card decides which is cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Which accepts larger boxes, DHL or UPS?

UPS takes pieces up to 274 cm long and 400 cm in length plus girth, up to 70 kg. DHL Express handles pieces up to 70 kg too, but anything over 120 cm long counts as oversize and attracts a surcharge or needs freight.

Does DHL Express or UPS Intl bill a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box lighter?

A 40 × 30 × 20 cm box weighing 3 kg bills 5 kg (DIM weight) with DHL Express Worldwide and 5 kg (DIM weight) with UPS Worldwide Express. The billable weight is the same, so the rate card and surcharges decide which is cheaper. Try your own box in the calculator above.
