How do carriers calculate dimensional weight?

DHL Express and FedEx International Priority use the same volumetric formula, cubic centimetres divided by 5000, rounded up to the next half kilogram. A 40 × 30 × 20 cm box of 3 kg bills 5 kg on both. Rates, fuel surcharges and size limits decide which costs less.

DIM weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor; billable = max(actual, DIM, surcharge minimum)

This page uses the same method as the Shipping DIM Weight Comparison Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A 40 × 30 × 20 cm box weighing 3 kg.

  1. 1DHL Express Worldwide: divisor 5,000, billed at 5 kg (DIM weight)
  2. 2FedEx International Priority: divisor 5,000, billed at 5 kg (DIM weight)

Both bill the same weight, so the rate card decides which is cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Do DHL and FedEx measure boxes differently?

Both measure the longest point on each side, including bulges from overfilled boxes. From the US both bill in pounds with a 139 divisor, and FedEx rounds each fractional inch up. Measure packed boxes, not the flat carton's nominal size.

Does DHL Express or FedEx Intl bill a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box lighter?

A 40 × 30 × 20 cm box weighing 3 kg bills 5 kg (DIM weight) with DHL Express Worldwide and 5 kg (DIM weight) with FedEx International Priority. The billable weight is the same, so the rate card and surcharges decide which is cheaper. Try your own box in the calculator above.
