How do carriers calculate dimensional weight?

Express couriers divide cubic centimetres by 5000; air cargo divides by 6000. The same light, bulky shipment therefore bills about 17% lighter as air freight. Air cargo adds minimum charges and handling fees, so the switch usually pays from around 100 kg chargeable.

DIM weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor; billable = max(actual, DIM, surcharge minimum)

This page uses the same method as the Shipping DIM Weight Comparison Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

10 cartons of 40 × 30 × 20 cm, 3 kg each.

  1. 1DHL Express Worldwide: divisor 5,000, billed at 5 kg (DIM weight)
  2. 2Air freight (IATA): divisor 6,000, billed at 40 kg (DIM weight)

Air freight (IATA) bills it lighter, so it takes the smaller DIM penalty.

Frequently asked questions

Why do couriers use 5000 and airlines 6000?

Couriers price door-to-door service for parcels that take up space in sorting hubs and vans as well as aircraft, so they charge a denser factor. Airlines price airport-to-airport space on the aircraft using the IATA standard of 6000, or 167 kg per cubic metre.

How many cartons before air freight makes sense?

Rough rule: once the shipment's chargeable weight passes 70 to 100 kg. Below that, courier rates with DIM included are usually cheaper than air freight's minimums, terminal handling and delivery. Enter your carton count to see how far apart the two chargeable weights are.

Does DHL Express or Air cargo bill 10 cartons of 40 × 30 × 20 cm lighter?

10 cartons of 40 × 30 × 20 cm, 3 kg each bills 5 kg (DIM weight) with DHL Express Worldwide and 40 kg (DIM weight) with Air freight (IATA). Air freight (IATA) charges the lighter weight, so on equal rates it costs less. Try your own box in the calculator above.
