How do carriers calculate dimensional weight?

UPS multiplies length, width and height in inches, each rounded up to the next whole inch, and divides by 139. It bills that or the actual weight, whichever is higher, in whole pounds, and at least 40 lb or 90 lb for parcels that trigger Additional Handling or Large Package surcharges.

DIM weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor; billable = max(actual, DIM, surcharge minimum)

This page uses the same method as the Shipping DIM Weight Comparison Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Frequently asked questions

Does UPS charge dimensional weight on every package?

Yes. UPS applies dimensional weight to all domestic and international packages, including UPS Ground, with no size threshold. That is the main difference from USPS, which only charges DIM on parcels over one cubic foot.

What dimensional weight divisor does UPS Ground use in 2026?

UPS Ground divides in³ by 139 and rounds up to the next whole lb. Each fractional inch is rounded up before multiplying.
