Frequently asked questions
What is the HS code for gaming consoles?
Usually 9504 50 00: "Video game consoles and machines". The last digits can change with material, power or use, and the duty can change with them, so check the full heading against your product before filing.
Is it cheaper to buy a PS5 abroad and carry it home?
Often, yes. One console in your luggage, with nothing else new, sits well inside the ₹75,000 baggage allowance, so it pays no duty at all. The 20% commercial rate here only applies to stock imported for sale. Check the plug and the region of any discs before you buy; consoles themselves are region-free. Work out your bag on the baggage duty calculator.
Why does a reseller pay about 44% on consoles?
The taxes stack. 20% BCD plus the 10% surcharge on it is 22% of the assessable value; 18% IGST is then charged on the value with that 22% added, another 21.96%. Together that is 43.96%. A GST-registered reseller claims the IGST back against sales, so its real cost at the border is the 22% customs duty.
