How do carriers calculate dimensional weight?

FedEx rounds each side up to the next whole inch, multiplies them and divides by 139, then bills whichever is heavier, that or the actual weight, in whole pounds. Packages over 48 in long or 105 in length plus girth bill at least 40 lb; oversize packages at least 90 lb.

DIM weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor; billable = max(actual, DIM, surcharge minimum)

This page uses the same method as the Shipping DIM Weight Comparison Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Frequently asked questions

Is FedEx dimensional weight the same as UPS?

For standard rates, yes: both divide by 139, round fractional inches up and bill whole pounds, and their 2026 Additional Handling and Large Package or Oversize thresholds match. Differences come from negotiated divisors and the rates themselves, not the published DIM rules.

What dimensional weight divisor does FedEx Ground use in 2026?

FedEx Ground divides in³ by 139 and rounds up to the next whole lb. Each fractional inch is rounded up before multiplying.
