How do carriers calculate dimensional weight?

DHL Express multiplies length, width and height in centimetres and divides by 5000 to get volumetric weight in kilograms, then charges that or the actual weight, whichever is higher, rounded up to the next half kilogram. From the US it bills the same in pounds with a 139 divisor.

DIM weight = L × W × H ÷ divisor; billable = max(actual, DIM, surcharge minimum)

This page uses the same method as the Shipping DIM Weight Comparison Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Frequently asked questions

Is DHL volumetric weight higher than air cargo?

Yes. Express couriers divide by 5000 while airlines and forwarders use the IATA 6000, so the same box bills 20% heavier by DHL Express than as air cargo. For a single carton, express is still usually cheaper overall because air cargo has minimum charges and handling fees.

What dimensional weight divisor does DHL Express Worldwide use in 2026?

DHL Express Worldwide divides cm³ by 5,000 and rounds up to the next 0.5 kg. Measured in inches it uses 139 and steps of 1 lb. Each fractional inch is rounded up before multiplying.
