How the Power Bank Import Duty Calculator India works

AV = (FOB + F + I) × R; BCD = AV × b; AIDC = AV × a; SWS = (BCD + AIDC) × s; IGST = (AV + BCD + AIDC + SWS) × g

This page uses the same method as the India Import Duty Calculator, which explains each term and assumption in full.

Worked example

A shipment of power banks and lithium-ion batteries from China invoiced at $6,000 FOB (HS 8507 60 00), with freight and insurance not separately known.

  1. 1At ₹95.96 to the dollar the FOB value is ₹5,75,759; adding 20% freight and 1.125% insurance gives an assessable value of ₹6,97,388
  2. 2BCD at 20% is ₹1,39,478
  3. 3SWS at 10% of the customs duty adds ₹13,948
  4. 4IGST at 18% on ₹8,50,813 is ₹1,53,146

Duty and IGST come to ₹3,06,572, 44.0% of the assessable value, for a landed cost of ₹10,03,960. A GST-registered importer claims the IGST back, leaving ₹8,50,813.

Frequently asked questions

What is the HS code for power banks and lithium-ion batteries?

Usually 8507 60 00: "Lithium-ion accumulators". The last digits can change with material, power or use, and the duty can change with them, so check the full heading against your product before filing.

Why does freight matter more for power banks?

Lithium batteries ship as dangerous goods, which limits airlines and raises the air freight rate. Freight is part of the assessable value, so a higher freight bill raises the duty too. Enter the actual freight rather than relying on the 20% default.

Are EV battery cells charged the same?

Cells imported for making EV and storage batteries have had concessional rates and exemptions tied to end use, which this calculator does not model. It uses the standard line for finished lithium-ion batteries and power banks.
