A Tesla Model Y Standard RWD ($39,990) against a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE FWD ($31,900) in California on SCE TOU-D-PRIME, driven 12,000 miles a year for 7 years, paid in cash, charging 80% at home.

How much does it cost to charge an EV on SCE TOU-D-PRIME?
About 23.0¢ a kWh in the 9 pm to 4 pm window, against 61.0¢ at peak. Charging 90% of the time off-peak works out to about 24.1¢ a kWh, or 6.5¢ a mile for an EV using 27 kWh per 100 miles, against 9.1¢ at the state's average rate. Check the current tariff on your bill, as rates change during the year.
Is TOU-D-PRIME worth its daily basic charge?
TOU-D-PRIME is open to homes with an EV, battery, or heat pump, and trades a basic charge of about 79¢ a day, around $24 a month, for lower per-kWh prices. An EV driving 12,000 miles uses around 300 kWh a month, so the lower rate usually outweighs the charge; a light driver should compare it with SCE's other time-of-use plans.
What does a year of EV charging cost on SCE TOU-D-PRIME?
A Tesla Model Y driven 12,000 miles a year, charged 80% at home with most of it in the 9 pm to 4 pm window, costs about $935 a year in electricity, blending 24.1¢ a kWh at home with fast charging. At California's average residential rate of 33.6¢ it would be about $1,182. The same miles in a Toyota RAV4 cost about $1,688 in gas.
