How the Claude Sonnet 5 API Cost Calculator works

As of October 13, 2026, Claude Sonnet 5 costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cache hits at $0.20. A request costs its input tokens × the input rate ÷ 1,000,000 plus its output tokens × the output rate ÷ 1,000,000; multiply by requests for the monthly bill.

Worked example

A chat feature on Claude Sonnet 5 sending 3,000 input tokens and getting 500 back, 1,000 times a day.

$330.00 a month. Caching a fixed system prompt that makes up 80% of the input would bring it to about $200.40, and the batch API would halve either figure.

How much does Claude Sonnet 5 cost per million tokens?

$2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens at Anthropic's standard rate. Cache hits are $0.20, and writing to the cache costs $2.50 for five minutes or $4 for an hour. The batch API takes 50% off. One rate covers its full 1 million-token context window.

Will Claude Sonnet 5's price go up?

Not as planned. Sonnet 5 launched at $2 input and $10 output per million tokens as introductory pricing through August 31, 2026, with a rise to $3 and $15 scheduled for September 1. Anthropic has since made $2 and $10 the standard price and cancelled the increase.

How big a request can Claude Sonnet 5 take?

Up to 1 million tokens of context, input and output together, and up to 128,000 output tokens per response. That is roughly 750,000 words of English. The calculator warns when a request will not fit.
